40th Anniversary Schedule
In fall 2013, in collaboration with the ASUO Women’s Center and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, the Center for the Study of Women in Society presents a three-day celebration of feminist research, activism, and creativity at the University of Oregon.
University of Oregon Disability Studies Forum 2013
This informal lunch and roundtable features two distinguished guest speakers in the field of disability studies as well as presentations of research by UO faculty members and graduate students. Our goals for this event are to bring UO faculty and graduate student researchers into a discussion together about disability studies, to provide mentorship to graduate students working in the field, and to raise awareness of disability studies across the university.
Laura Edwards—“Women, Law, and Culture: Rethinking Legal Change in the Civil War Era”
This presentation is about the ways that ordinary people in the South, particularly African American women, contributed to the legal changes that we associate with the Reconstruction Amendments and top-down change. These groups had a much broader, expansive notion of “rights” and also of what the government should accomplish—and those ideas, in part, were based in expansive notions of local governance and in the culture of the South.

At this 40th Anniversary kick-off event, guest speakers and a new documentary honor agents of change at the University of Oregon and their legacies of feminist research, teaching, and activism.
“Women’s Stories, Women’s Lives” Symposium — 40th celebration
Friday, Nov. 8, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., the “Women’s Stories, Women’s Lives” Symposium explores four decades of feminist research and activism through five interwoven themes: women’s rights, violence against women, women’s health, activism and policy, and education and employment. Guest speakers will share personal narratives, visual illustrations, and dialogue to illuminate some of the local, cultural, and global issues at stake across forty years of women’s lives.
A Conversation with Ursula K. Le Guin
On Friday, Nov. 8, 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Erb Memorial Union (EMU), “A Conversation with Ursula K. Le Guin” sets the stage for feminist speculations of future worlds. Le Guin started publishing science fiction and fantasy in the 1960s and has won the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and World Fantasy awards, each more than once.
Sally Miller Gearhart “Worlds Beyond World” Symposium: Feminist Utopian Thought
In this symposium, authors and cultural critics explore feminist creative production and the roles of speculative fiction and utopian ideas in imagining feminist futures.
“The New Anti-Rape Movement on Campus: Networked Survivors Fighting for Reform” — Caroline Heldman and Danielle Dirks
Caroline Heldman and Danielle Dirks are leaders in the fight to strengthen campus sexual-assault policies and enforcement. In their role as professors at Occidental College in Los Angeles, they took the lead on a Title IX complaint last April, which said that the college had violated Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

How to Peer-Review Multimodal Content
The nature of peer review is changing, as authors experiment with new modes of knowledge production. On 17 January 2014, 1-3pm PST, the Fembot Collective will host a workshop that explores how we review and peer edit multimodal content.
Writing Women into Wikipedia
Fembot, in collaboration with the ASUO Women’s Center, the Center for the Study of Women in Society, the School of Journalism and Communication and the UO Libraries is hosting events in Eugene, Oregon and online to write women into Wikipedia.
2013-14 Lorwin Lecture
Lawyer Wendy Murphy, JD, delivers the 2014 Lorwin Lecture on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. This keynote lecture focuses on “civil rights violence” and the overt and covert subjugation of violence against women as something other than a civil rights harm. Wendy Murphy specializes in the representation of crime victims, women and children. Her book, And Justice For Some: An Exposé of the Lawyers and Judges Who Let Dangerous Criminals Go Free, was published in 2007.
Conference: “Alternative Sovereignties: Decolonization Through Indigenous Vision and Struggle”
The Alternative Sovereignties: Decolonization through Indigenous Vision and Struggle conference will be held May 8 – 10 at the Many Nations Longhouse and the EMU.
The conference seeks to further academic discussions about American Indian and First Nations sovereignty in all of its manifestations, and position Native peoples at the center of those debates and to build intellectual and institutional relationships throughout the broader Pacific Northwest.

2014 CSWS Northwest Women Writers Symposium “Family, Animal, Story”
Our keynote writer is 2014 PEN/Faulkner Award-winner and New York Times–bestselling author Karen Joy Fowler, whose novel We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves has opened up new ways of talking about family dynamics and the ethics of animal research. Saturday’s panels and workshops will meet at Eugene Downtown Public Library. All events are free and open to the public.
