CSWS: “Women’s Stories, Women’s Lives” JSMA Photo Exhibit
This special selection of photographs from the permanent collection is on view in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the Center for the Study of Women in Society, a campus organization that creates, funds, and shares research that addresses the complicated nature of gender identities and inequalities. Curated by graduate students Sarah Turner with assistance from Regan Watjus, “Women’s Stories, Women’s Lives” presents images representing the diversity of the female experience.
A Conversation with Ursula K. Le Guin
On Friday, Nov. 8, 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Erb Memorial Union (EMU), “A Conversation with Ursula K. Le Guin” sets the stage for feminist speculations of future worlds. Le Guin started publishing science fiction and fantasy in the 1960s and has won the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and World Fantasy awards, each more than once.

This informal lunch and roundtable features two distinguished guest speakers in the field of disability studies as well as presentations of research by UO faculty members and graduate students. Our goals for this event are to bring UO faculty and graduate student researchers into a discussion together about disability studies, to provide mentorship to graduate students working in the field, and to raise awareness of disability studies across the university.

Presented in collaboration with the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and ASUO Women’s Center, CSWS’s 40th Anniversary Celebration will be held Nov. 7-9, 2013, in UO’s Erb Memorial Union.
“The New Anti-Rape Movement on Campus: Networked Survivors Fighting for Reform” — Caroline Heldman and Danielle Dirks
Caroline Heldman and Danielle Dirks are leaders in the fight to strengthen campus sexual-assault policies and enforcement. In their role as professors at Occidental College in Los Angeles, they took the lead on a Title IX complaint last April, which said that the college had violated Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

Laura Edwards—“Women, Law, and Culture: Rethinking Legal Change in the Civil War Era”
This presentation is about the ways that ordinary people in the South, particularly African American women, contributed to the legal changes that we associate with the Reconstruction Amendments and top-down change. These groups had a much broader, expansive notion of “rights” and also of what the government should accomplish—and those ideas, in part, were based in expansive notions of local governance and in the culture of the South.

“In The Wrong Body” tells the story of Mavi Susel, who underwent Cuba’s first gender reassignment operation in 1988. In addition this documentary explores such timely issues as the meaning of femininity in the macho and patriarchal society of Cuba.

The Alternative Sovereignties: Decolonization through Indigenous Vision and Struggle conference will be held May 8 – 10 at the Many Nations Longhouse and the EMU.
The conference seeks to further academic discussions about American Indian and First Nations sovereignty in all of its manifestations, and position Native peoples at the center of those debates and to build intellectual and institutional relationships throughout the broader Pacific Northwest.
