For the first time, a CSWS Noon Talk will feature live musical performances.
2025 Faculty Research Fellow Joyce Wei-Jo Chen, an assistant professor in the School of Music and Dance, will be sharing her research, “Cherchez la femme: Music by Baroque Women Composers.” The talk explores how music by Baroque women composers comes to life through performance, teaching, and collaboration.
Drawing on concerts she has hosted this year with Collegium Musicum and her own studio teaching, Chen will reflect on programming works by composers such as Barbara Strozzi, Isabella Leonarda, and Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre. The presentation takes the form of a short lecture-recital, with student performers joining Chen to demonstrate how historically informed performance and pedagogy can function as a form of research, inviting audiences to hear early music not as a closed canon, but as an evolving, inclusive practice.
The talk and performance will be held 12-1 PM Wednesday, April 29, in Berwick Hall, Room 101 (Tykeson Performance Hall), 1585 E. 13th Ave, Eugene. The event is free and all are welcome.
