Noon Talks are presented by recent recipients of research grants from the Center for the Study of Women in Society. These scholarly talks span the interests of many departments in the areas of women and gender.

On Wednesday, May 11, 2022, education studies PhD candidate Max Skorodinsky will present, “More Than Binary: Gender Diversity in Computer Science Education and Employment.” Talk description:“This talk reports on a research project that investigates the experience of Transgender and Gender Nonconforming (TGNC) people in computing education and employment. Over the past two decades, researchers in Computer Science (CS) education increasingly point to the widening participation gap for women in computing-related educational and workforce spaces. Efforts to address this disparity are part of a larger reform effort, that of broadening the participation of minoritized and underserved populations in CS. While a necessary endeavor, research that aims to increase participation of women in computing is deeply steeped in theorizing gender as binary, which has direct implications for gender-diverse people. There is little research in CS education that acknowledges and investigates lived gender outside of the binary. Centering the voices of non-binary and transgender individuals in computing, this project employs surveys, interviews, and focus groups to gain a deeper understanding of the experience of TGNC people in computing. The talk will highlight the nuanced ways that TGNC diverse people in Computer Science navigate their gender identity in a field that is steeped in notions of binary gender, apoliticism, meritocracy, and neutrality.”
