The CSWS Women of Color Project presents a discussion of The Race Card: From Gaming Technologies to Model Minorities (NYU Press, 2019) by Tara Fickle, 3-5 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2021.

Fickle is an associate professor of English, affiliated with Asian & Pacific Studies and Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies at the University of Oregon. Her book shows how games and game theory shaped fictions of race upon which the nation relies. Drawing from a wide range of literary and critical texts, analog and digital games, journalistic accounts, marketing campaigns, and archival material, Fickle illuminates the ways Asian Americans have had to fit the roles, play the game, and follow the rules to be seen as valuable in the US.

Guest panelists include Crystal Parikh, professor of English and Social & Cultural Analysis, director of the Asian/Pacific/American Institute, New York University, and author of Writing Human Rights: The Political Imaginaries of Writers of Color (University of Minnesota Press, 2017). Lynn Fujiwara, associate professor of Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies, University of Oregon, and co-editor of Asian American Feminisms and Women of Color Politics (University of Washington Press, 2018).
