August 20, 2018—, head of the UO’s Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, has been selected for a half-time position as associate vice provost for academic affairs.

Braun, also an associate professor in the Department of International Studies, will continue her research and teaching half time, according to an announcement from the Office of the Provost.

In her new role, Braun will focus on academic program review and faculty success initiatives. She also will serve as the link to the provost for several units, including the Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies and the Labor Education and Research Center.

“I am thrilled to be joining this team dedicated to the promotion of academic success on campus,” Braun said. “I look forward to working together with partners across campus to refine processes to better serve the shared goals of faculty, units and the institution.”

Braun started her new position Aug. 1. She holds a doctorate in anthropology and sociology, as well as a master’s degree in social relations, from the University of California, Irvine.

Originally, the position of vice provost for academic affairs was conceived as a full-time position that would focus on promotion and tenure, as well as program review and other components of faculty success. However, Provost Jayanth Banavar decided to split the position into two half-time roles to give faculty members interested in administration the chance to continue working on research and teaching.

Ellen Herman, vice provost for academic affairs and a history professor who serves as co-director of the Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics, fills out the other half of the position. In her vice provost role, Herman manages central promotion and tenure efforts for faculty, and also identifies ways to make process and systems improvements.
