Feminist Futures: CSWS 50th Anniversary

The Center for the Study of Women in Society is celebrating 50 years of enriching the University of Oregon community. Starting in Spring 2023, our year-long celebration will include invited speakers, exhibits, performances, and events that speak to intersectional feminist research and the ways in which gender, race, class, ability, and sexual orientation intersect and inform our visions of social justice. As the Center looks ahead to our next five decades, we will explore both the promises for and the imperilment of our “feminist futures” within fraught social, political, and environmental landscapes both nationally and globally.

CSWS Grant Writing Workshop at Knight Library

CSWS is offering a graduate student grant writing workshop with Michael Murashige, writing consultant for the Center on Diversity and Community (CoDaC), from 12–1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, in the Knight Library DREAM Lab. The workshop will help graduate students write a strong CSWS grant application by reviewing important elements and some common oversights. Special Collections Research Fellows Speaker Series

Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) is pleased to host an ongoing series of lectures by traveling fellows whose research and expertise include feminist science fiction, Oregon lesbian intentional communities, the novelist Ken Kesey, conservative and libertarian political movements, as well as print and print culture. Talks are free, open to the public and held virtually on Zoom. More information, including applications for future fellowships, is available on SCUA’s website here.

OVPRI features CSWS in Research News

The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) will be featuring the Center for the Study of Women in Society (CSWS) in its upcoming Pursuit newsletter. The article, "Gender Research Opens Pathways for Feminist Futures," will help to broaden awareness of the CSWS mission, anniversary events, and DuckFunder campaign to benefit undergraduate research and skill-building in the region.

History of CSWS

For 50 years CSWS has funded feminist scholarship at the University of Oregon. Our mission is simple: we create, fund, and share research that addresses the complicated nature of gender identities and inequalities.

Our ability to do this resulted from an incredible act of generosity. In 1983, the hard work and vision of faculty members working in what was then called the Center for the Sociological Study of Women attracted the attention of Fortune magazine editor William Harris. His endowment, the largest single gift ever given to the university at that time, was given in memory of his wife, Jane Grant, an early feminist and co-founder of The New Yorker.
