Come learn how to increase the visibility of your humanities and social science work among academic and non-academic audiences from a panel of experts including the University of Oregon's Lauren Kessler (School of Journalism and Communication), Nicole Dahmen (School of Journalism and Communication), Molly Blancett from UO Media Relations, Jennifer Lawless (Professor of Government at American University), and Marty Brown (Marketing Manager from OSU Press). We'll discuss many topics including how to promote your book, creating professional networks, and promoting your work using traditional and social media.
- Nicole Smith Dahmen is an assistant professor in the UO School of Journalism and Communication. Her research focuses on ethical and technological issues in visual communication, with an emphasis on photojournalism in the Digital Age, and has been published in such leading journals as Visual Communication Quarterly, American Behavioral Scientist, Newspaper Research Journal, and Journalism Studies.
- Lauren Kessler is a professor in the UO School of Journalism and Communication, director of the Writing Initiative, and founder and past director of the master’s program in literary nonfiction and the master’s program in multimedia narrative journalism. She is also the author of nine works of narrative nonfiction, including her latest, Raising the Barre: Big Dreams, False Starts and My Midlife Quest to Dance The Nutcracker. Her books have won the Pacific Northwest Book Award, the Oregon Book Award, and the New England Book Show Award.
- Marty Brown is the marketing manager at Oregon State University Press. She coordinates marketing outreach for twenty new titles a year. Prior to joining OSU Press, she held many positions in both trade and scholarly publishing, most recently as COO at Timber Press, a horticultural reference publisher based in Portland. She is a former faculty member of Portland State University’s publishing program.
- Jennifer Lawless is a professor of government at American University, director of the Women & Politics Institute, and a nationally recognized expert on women and politics. Her research is focused on political ambition, campaign and elections, and gender politics in the United States. She is the author of Running from Office: Why Young Americans are Turned Off to Politics and many other books.
- Molly Blancett is the media relations manager in University Communications at UO. She was previously a public relations & social media manager at Travel Lane County and reporter and assignment editor at KVAL-TV, Fisher Communications. She is an expert in social media, public relations, and media relations. She helps faculty at the University of Oregon publicize their work and connect with media.
