Becoming Bicultural: Latino Immigrant Mothers Raising American Children
RIG Description
This research interest group will address cross-cultural issues confronted by Latino immigrant mothers who are raising their children in the United States. In bringing Latino mother/ professionals together in a group setting, we expect to produce feelings of empathy, shared convictions, and cohesiveness among the group participants—creating a sense that we are not alone here raising bilingual bicultural kids. In this climate of mutual respect, validation, and encouragement from peers, w e want to bring our cultural traditions into the assessment of real life situations, to better understand the issues and to develop future research projects.
Our research interest group will meet once a month in the evening (6:00 to 8:00 pm) at Centro Latino, in Eugene. We have already secured the commitment by Centro’s Executive Director to host our meetings. We plan to take notes and tape some of our discussions to produce internal reports, and use the quotations in future research proposals. We will invite local speakers to explore particular topics in depth with us. We will share academic readings, and connect the authors’ ideas to our own personal and professional experiences.

Reading Empires
RIG Description
This RIG will examine empirical, theoretical and methodological questions regarding how we conceptualize and study emergent forms of empires in the 21st century. We plan to engage with texts that attempt to go beyond the conventional boundaries of knowledge. Based on our scholarly interests we would investigate empires of knowledge, of markets, technology, media and militarism, with a focus on jihadist movements.

RIG Description
The Social Science Feminist Network RIG is committed to creating a space for the discussion of feminist work and the sharing of ideas and experiences of being in academia. Our goal is to continue the feminist traditional of collaborative work and mutual support. For this reason, we believe that a cooperative group structure and a collective process of decision-making works best for our intellectual endeavors.
Upcoming Activities:
The Social Science Feminist Research Interest Group has initiated a year-long, two-credit Feminist Reading and Research Group that began Fall Quarter, 2007.
This year-long reading group focuses on feminist theory and methods. This reading group meets every two weeks and will continue throughout the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. The anticipated outcome of this reading group will be a research proposal created by the group to enact a feminist research project, which began Fall Quarter, 2008.
Selection of the readings and facilitation of the discussion will rotate among group members.
Spring Quarter 2008: Feminist Research Project Proposal
During this quarter, participants will work on developing a proposal for a research project related to the Winter Quarter’s readings. At the end of the term, the group will submit their proposal to CSWS for possible funding. This project will become the focus of the RIG during academic year 2008-09, and it will hopefully result in a group publication at the end of the project. lty member on the project.
