Reading Empires RIG

This RIG will examine empirical, theoretical and methodological questions regarding how we conceptualize and study emergent forms of empires in the 21st century. We plan to engage with texts that attempt to go beyond the conventional boundaries of knowledge. Based on our scholarly interests we would investigate empires of knowledge, of markets, technology, media and militarism, with a focus on jihadist movements.

Plans for 2005-06:

  • Invite several junior and senior scholars to campus for speaking engagements
  • Do selected readings
  • Share work-in-progress
  • Join American Institute for Bangladesh Studies and the American Institute for Indian Studies
  • Discuss plans for a CSWS conference on Empire in the 21st Century
