Odilia Romero
FIOB (Frente Indígena de Organizaciones Binacionales, Binational Front of Indigenous Organizations)
Ms. Romero is currently the coordinator for the Los Angeles office of the Bi-national Center for Oaxacan Indigenous Development. She works to create sustainable community change through the development of community-based Oaxacan leadership. As a member of, and advocate for, the Oaxacan community in Los Angeles, Romero’s approach is to build on existing strengths and nurture capacities that preserve indigenous culture. She also works in improving the quality of life, and in enhancing community power. Currently, she also serves as the Women’s Coordinator of the Binational Organization of Indigenous Front in Los Angeles. As Women’s Coordinator, Romero’s role is vital to the FIOB. She works to establish gender equity within the FIOB through workshops and creating a dialogue around gender. Her role also includes building bridges between immigrant-led organizations and academic, economic, and political institutions in both Mexico and the United States. She is part of strategic planning in both countries in order to implement FIOB programs. Odilia is also a board member of the Southern California Library for Social Change , in which he role is to provide support to the staff, oversee library programming, and fundraise for the library. She currently is working on an awarded grant to coordinate a research project on indigenous migrants and transnational movements with academics and activists from the Frente Indigena de Organizaciones Binacionales, UCLA, and Colegio de la Frontera Norte. Romero also is the editor of El Tequio which is a Binational Magazine that focuses on indigenous migrants.
