2013 CSWS Jane Grant Fellowship and Graduate and Faculty Grant Awardees
March 27, 2013—The Center for the Study of Women in Society at the University of Oregon has awarded more than $70,000 in graduate student and faculty research grants to support research on women and gender during the 2013-14 academic year. Nine UO graduate students will receive awards ranging from $2,000 to $16,000. Six faculty scholars will receive awards of up to $6,000.
Jane Grant Dissertation Fellowship
Miriam Abelson, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology, was awarded the prestigious Jane Grant Dissertation Fellowship. Her field-based research looks at “Transgender Experiences and Transmasculinities in Three U.S. Regions.”

CSWS Travel Grants for travel expenses incurred from July 1 – Dec. 31, 2013
These small grants (to $200), for both faculty and graduate students, provide partial support for travel to present papers that relate to women and gender at a conference, or for a professional activity related to women and gender. See grant guidelines for more specifics.

Thinking about applying for a research grant? UO faculty and graduate students from any academic discipline are eligible to apply for CSWS research grants—so long as your research is related to women and gender.

CSWS Grant Winner Awarded Fulbright Scholarship
August 22, 2012—Brian Guy is one of seven University of Oregon students awarded a Fulbright scholarship for study abroad. A recipient of a 2012 CSWS Graduate Student Research Grant, Guy is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science. His research focuses on “ Code Violations: Men, Gender Inequality, and the Contentious Politics of Senegal’s Family Code.”
CSWS Awards over $65,000 in 2012 Research Grants to UO Scholars

March 30, 2012, Eugene, OR—For the 2012-13 academic year, the Center for the Study of Women in Society at the University of Oregon has awarded more than $65,000 in graduate student and faculty research grants to support research on women and gender. Ten UO graduate students will receive awards ranging from $1,250 to $12,000. Six faculty scholars will receive awards ranging from $5,792 to $6,000.
Easther Chigumira, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Geography, received the prestigious Jane Grant Dissertation Award. Her field-based research will look at land reform issues pertaining to women in Zimbabwe. Two graduate students in the Department of Psychology—Rosemary Bernstein and Brianna Hailey—are doing research on preventing depression and enhancing confidence in pregnant women in recovery from substance dependence. Jessica Cavas, a graduate student in the Department of International Studies and in Planning, Public Policy and Management will be traveling to Delhi, India, to do research on how an NGO’s literacy program is working as an intervention program to transition women out of sex work and helping prevent sex trafficking of girls and women. As part of the Center for the Study of Women in Society’s 40th Anniversary Celebration, and as a way of honoring the role that Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) played in the founding of CSWS, we are collaborating with the University of Oregon Knight Library and the Robert D. Clark Honors College (CHC) to create the Le Guin Feminist Science Fiction Fellowship. (Guidelines PDF)
Purpose: The intention of the Le Guin Feminist Science Fiction Fellowship is to encourage research within collections in the area of feminist science fiction.
